You’ll find continuity programs everywhere you look and many of them have little to do with content. For example, the savvy owners behind Aweber, Wordtracker, and similar tools have built small online empires based on delivering valuable tools for a monthly fee. You can do the same. Regardless of your niche, here are three reasons to create and profit from a continuity program.

#1 - Predictable Revenue Base

Suppose you write an information product and sell it for $97. During the first month, you sell 100 copies and gross $9,700. It’s a good month. During the following month, suppose you sell 60 copies. In the third month after your product’s launch, you sell 50 copies. The income generated from your information product is falling. Soon, you’ll need to brainstorm ways to boost sales or develop another product.

A continuity program helps to solve this problem by providing long-term, stable revenue. You won’t need to create a continuous stream of products and motivate people to buy them. Instead, you can upload those products to a membership site and charge subscribers a monthly fee to access them. It is far easier to encourage paying members to continue their membership than it is to persuade people to make a new purchase decision.

#2 - Larger Audience Through A Lower Price

Here’s an advantage that is often overlooked, even by those who operate continuity programs. Because the monthly subscription fees are recurring, you can charge less for your content and tools. In doing so, you’ll reach a much larger audience and make more money in the process.

For example, suppose you develop a new online tool each month for twelve months. If you were to release them individually, it’s unlikely that your audience will purchase every product; a few might, but most won’t. In effect, you’re limiting your exposure because most people won’t be able to afford the entire collection.

Now, imagine uploading your tools to a private site and charging members a small monthly $10 fee in order to access them. The lower price will attract a much larger audience. Rather than a few customers buying your products sporadically, a larger number of people will be motivated to become members and pay monthly. Assuming each person maintains their membership for at least a few months, you’ll make far more money in the long run. What’s more, some people will remain members for years.

#3 - Platform From Which To Promote Related Products

You’ve heard it is easier to sell to customers than it is to those who have never purchased a product from you. As ongoing customers, the members of your continuity program are more likely to buy products from you than anyone else on your list. But, the potential to generate recurring income goes further than their individual sales.

For example, suppose one of the online tools you have created for your continuity program uses an API to collect keywords used in Twitter’s search facility. Your members will have access to this tool. But, suppose you were to create a separate info-product that describes - in detail - the steps involved with using your “Twitter tool” to make money. Your program members are perfectly targeted for this info-product. As ongoing customers, their trust will not only lead to sales, but it will also encourage them to become affiliates.

Even better, you can “reward” members by giving them a discount from the price non-members will pay, thereby encouraging them to maintain their membership.

There’s an enormous opportunity to develop a continuity program in nearly every market imaginable. Whether you’re offering search engine optimization strategies, dating tips for the divorced crowd, or automotive repair advice, this type of program can represent a major profit center. Start thinking of ways to add a continuity program to your online business. In a few months, you might discover it’s your largest income generator.

We talked about information products in a recent post. That discussion was in the context of how to promote info-products assuming that you had created a good product in the first place. Unfortunately, a lot of would-be information empire builders sabotage themselves by creating poorly thought-out products. After putting in weeks (even months) of painstaking effort, they discover there’s little - if any - demand.

Today, we’re going to focus on how to create info-products that sell quickly and reliably. There are 4 major steps involved. We’ll start from the beginning and I’ll take you through the entire process.

#1 - Look For Desperation

Nothing drives sales as effectively as desperation. People will procrastinate making a purchase until they’re forced to choose between doing so and a considerably less-appealing fate. For example, consider a person who copes with anxiety attacks. That person is likely desperate for relief. A short e-book that describes how to stop the attacks taps directly into that desperation. The same is true for those who are on the verge of losing their homes, suffering a health issue, or going through a divorce. Desperate people buy solutions.

Lest you think this strategy seems mercenary, keep in mind that the best way to build a sustainable info-product business is by helping people solve problems.

#2 - Perform Your Research

You don’t need to be an expert on the topic about which you’re writing. But, you do need to be able to perform research well. Remember, you want to create an information product that solves a problem. That’s what generates ongoing sales. That’s what motivates your customers to tell their friends about your product. Plus, if affiliates know that you’ve created a fantastic info-product, they’ll feel more comfortable about promoting it.

Your research might require that you purchase resources. Don’t balk at doing so. Spending a few dollars on top-notch information can pave the way for an e-book or report that generates thousands of dollars in profit each month.

#3 - Write To A Specific Audience

The market you’re tapping into will likely be broad. There are many markets that are called niches, but actually represent audiences that are too wide. For example, suppose you’re writing an e-book about losing weight. Are you targeting teens? New mothers? People who are medically obese and must shed weight for immediate health reasons?

The more specific and targeted your information product is, the more easily you’ll be able to address those who are most likely to purchase it. Some niches - weight loss is a good example - are well suited for an ongoing series of info-products that are targeted to small sects of a broad market.

#4 - Focus On Sales And Marketing

The best information product can fail unless you market it well. It begins with your sales letter. Many info-product creators can produce an e-book easily, but stumble when it comes to writing the sales letter for that e-book.

People buy based on emotion, even if they fail to realize it. That’s why desperation is such a potent force to tap into with your info-products. An easy way to begin is to create your sales letter before writing your e-book. Your headline, subheads, bullets, copy, promises, and guarantee can all be created beforehand. In fact, doing so gives you a concrete blueprint from which to create your blockbuster info-product.

Launching an information product business and promoting it through online marketing strategies can be incredibly lucrative. If you follow the approach I’ve described today, you can create a business that will pay dividends for years.

Most marketers are not leveraging email sequences to their full potential. In their defense, there are myriad other ways to drive traffic and sales. For example, search engine optimization strategies, pay per click marketing, and social media optimization all offer powerful ways to reach your audience. But, they require ongoing tracking and maintenance; in the case of PPC advertising, there’s also an ongoing cost.

By contrast, email sequences can be automated. If your emails are targeted and compelling, they’ll deliver a  continuous stream of traffic that generates passive income. What’s more, the larger your lists grow, the more income you’ll generate. Here are two ideas for integrating email sequences into your current online business.

#1 - Driving Traffic To Adsense Sites

Adsense continues to be one of the easiest ways to generate passive income. However, the days of building a 20-page content site, submitting a few articles for links, and waiting for waves of search engine traffic are coming to an end. While your competitors struggle to maintain their lagging rankings, take the road less traveled. Design an email sequence for each of your Adsense sites.

Your sequence does not have to be complicated. It only needs to compel subscribers to visit your site on a regular basis. For example, suppose you have a content site about workers compensation. Income is generated by Adsense clicks. Create an autoresponder sequence that delivers emails twice weekly. Each email should be short enough to motivate subscribers to visit a specific page on your site.

Next, set up a Google Alert to keep up with current news in the workers compensation field. You’ll have an endless supply of new material to add to your site with which draw subscribers back.

Be sure to experiment with your emails to improve your clickthrough rate. Writing style, form, length, and layout all play a role. As your list of subscribers grows, so too will your repeat traffic and Adsense income.

#2 - Pushing Subscribers Through Your Marketing Funnel

I’ve mentioned creating an inventory of products at varying price points. There is a powerful psychological reason for doing so. As you know, it is far easier to motivate a current customer to buy another product from you than to entice a new prospect to make a first purchase. Furthermore, each subsequent purchase a customer makes nudges them further up the comfort ladder. In effect, the more they buy, the more comfortable they are buying from you. Email sequences can be designed to encourage your customers to move further along your marketing funnel.

For example, suppose you maintain a site in the weight loss space. You have created a number of Special Reports, ebooks, print manuals, and DVDs that range in price from $7 to $127. A large portion of first-time visitors might be willing to spend $7 for a Special Report. Few would be willing to part with $127 for a package of DVDs. Your email sequence can help maximize the lifetime value of each customer. Here’s how:

Create a small 10-page report and offer it to visitors in exchange for opting into your autoresponder sequence. Within a few days of the opt-in, schedule an email that points out a specific idea mentioned in your report. For example, it might say, “Hi Bob, just wanted to make sure you enjoyed my report and saw the tip on page 7.” A few days later, send another automated message that encourages “Bob” to check out your new $17 ebook that goes into far more detail about the items mentioned in your report.

When Bob purchases your $17 ebook, shift his opt-in to a customer email sequence. Then, use the same principles to graduate him to your next information product along your marketing funnel (a $27/month membership site, perhaps). The more Bob buys from you, the more open he’ll be to buying your higher-priced products. With each product he buys, shift his opt-in to a new email sequence that works to graduate him to the next product.

We’ve only scratched the surface here. My goal was to jumpstart your creativity in designing email sequences that expand your income base. There are many more ways to use them and we’ll explore how you can do so in the near future.

Each of us loves free traffic coming to our sites. Whether we’re maintaining blogs, content sites with Adsense, or online stores, more traffic means higher revenue. If you have been using the search engine optimization strategies I’ve shown you in the past, you’re already building momentum in the organic ranks.

Today, I’m going to explain a slightly different approach to generating free traffic to your online properties. I’ll show you how to tap into the public’s insatiable hunger regarding current events and describe creative ways for maximizing its traffic potential. Chances are, you’re not fully leveraging this strategy yet. Let’s change that.

Where To Uncover Current Event Ideas

Your first step is to gather a few resources that will deliver a constant stream of current event ideas. Google Trends is one of the best. It is updated every minute and provides a bird’s eye view of most popular phrases people are using to search. Yahoo Buzz is another good resource, though it is updated a bit less frequently.

Because Twitter has become such a powerhouse traffic magnet lately, their Twitter Search is a valuable tool for mining current events. You’ll need to put a little more effort into it than you would for Google Trends or Yahoo Buzz. But, with millions of members who visit daily, you’ll uncover popular topics that would otherwise remain hidden.

Planting Search Engine Seeds

Now that you have an ongoing stream of current event ideas, you can quickly gain traction for popular keywords in Google and Yahoo. Google’s current ranking algorithm allows pages targeting popular phrases to climb the organic rankings quickly. While they haven’t admitted it publicly, it’s reasonable to assume the data from Google Trends is an influence on what they consider “popular.”

This is an opportunity to expand your search engine coverage. Create new pages or blog posts that target popular keywords.

For example, as of today, Google Trends reports that the phrase “American Idol voting controversy” has picked up steam. If you maintain a music-related blog, create a new post specifically targeting that phrase.

There is always a mountain of free search engine traffic generated from people searching for news about celebrities, sporting events, politicians, and similar topics. This is a way to tap into that traffic and cast your net wide.

Reserving Feeder Site Domain Names

Another part of Google’s ranking algorithm favors domain names that match searchers’ queries. While most perfect matches on longstanding topics have been reserved, there’s a pool of opportunity in current events that are just beginning to gain traction. That might include searches for new celebrities, movies, products, and controversies. It’s unlikely that domains matching newly popular phrases have been snatched. If you act quickly, you can reserve them.

Depending on the market you’re involved in, these matching domain names can be developed as feeder sites. The goal is to build them with relevant content and add them to your growing network. As the feeder sites rise in the organic rankings (based partially on their match), they’ll attract more search engine traffic which you can funnel toward your money sites.

Tapping into current events in order to generate search engine traffic is a powerful free internet marketing strategy. But, leveraging it properly takes effort. The good news is that this type of traffic exists perpetually. New topics become explosively popular on a daily basis. If you build a system for taking advantage of these topics, you can outflank the competitors in your search space and draw more people to your sites.

In a recent post, we briefly explored using the social networking landscape as a free internet marketing strategy. That post was a good primer to trigger your imagination. But, it is impossible to provide a comprehensive course on social media marketing within one post or article. Today, we’re going to focus exclusively on Twitter. The service is getting increased exposure in the broad media, which means it is quickly becoming a traffic juggernaut. Use the right approach on Twitter and you can bring that traffic to your site.

Here’s how…

Brainstorm A Controversial Article Idea

When Twitter first launched, it attracted a heavy tech-oriented population similar to Digg. These folks are usually the first adopters in any new technology, so it’s hardly surprising they gravitated toward Twitter. If you wanted to get their attention, you needed to create content that was both controversial and technical.

Times change quickly. Twitter has hit the mainstream with coverage on CNN, Time, and other popular media properties. That means anything you write that is controversial can potentially hit a sweet spot and attract traffic. Think about content that will polarize your market.

Install The Tweet This Wordpress Plugin

First, I recommend that you use a Wordpress blog to post your controversial articles. Not only does the architecture perfectly complement effective search engine optimization strategies, but some of the plugins will make your Twitter marketing much easier.

Download and install the “Tweet This” Wordpress plugin on your blog. It automatically loads a link at the end of each of your posts that allows your readers “re-tweet” them with a single click. If you’re using Twitter to drive traffic, I cannot overstate the importance of this plugin for your blog.

Let’s take a look at how your controversial article and the “Tweet This” plugin come together to attract attention, increase your traffic, and build momentum in your readership.

Triggering The Twitter Viral Effect

Suppose you’ve written a controversial article that is relevant to your market. For example, if you’re marketing to the baby parenting space, you might write a post about breastfeeding in public. If you maintain a political blog, you might write about immigration policy. Any position that polarizes the community within your market should work.

Once you create the content, post it on your blog. Then, “tweet” about it within your Twitter account. The more Twitter followers you have, the quicker bump in traffic you’ll enjoy (I’ll explain how to build your following in a future post). Similarly, the larger your blog readership, the faster your article will spread virally.

Encourage your blog readers to jump-start your post by clicking the “Tweet This” link at the end of it. Assuming many of them have a Twitter account, their re-tweets will get the ball rolling and increase your exposure. Some of their Twitter followers will visit your blog post and re-tweet it as well, creating a snowball effect. A few of them will also subscribe to your RSS feed, which paves the way for re-tweets on your future posts.

At this point, you’re already enjoying a traffic jump. However, imagine for a moment that one of the people in that chain owns a popular site that is read by tens of thousands of people. They enjoy - or hate - your controversial blog post enough to re-tweet on their Twitter account. I’ll leave the potential traffic numbers to your imagination (but, get a dedicated server to handle it).

We’re Only Scraping The Surface

Unless Twitter mysteriously implodes under its own momentum, the service is going to be around for a long time. We’ve barely scraped the surface on how to harness its power to bring traffic to your site. There’s plenty more to reveal, such as branding your Twitter account, adding gear, optimizing for Twitter search, and more. We’ll get to those items in upcoming posts. In the meantime, start brainstorming article ideas that can ignite a little controversy in your market.

Making money online is simple. Identify what people want, figure out a reliable way to reach them, and position yourself between them and the product.

The basic process of generating income is the same whether you’re launching Adsense sites, selling information products, promoting affiliate products, or managing membership sites. The opportunities you can leverage to make money online are only limited by your imagination.

Having said that, a lot of online entrepreneurs make a devastating mistake: they focus entirely on short-term money makers. To be sure, there’s a lot of money involved and its scent can be seductive. The problem is that such opportunities offer limited long-term potential. There are scores of people who have gone from making over $100,000 a month to scrambling to pay the mortgage.

Today, I’m going to make a quick case for exploiting short-term money makers. But, more importantly, I’m going to explain why you need to focus your time and effort on building long-term businesses.

The Case For Short-Term Money Makers

There will always be fads that offer the potential for a quick payday. If you can identify them and act quickly, you can make money - often, a lot of it. For example, PPC marketers immediately jumped onto the acai berry phenomenon, building keyword lists, designing landing pages, and creating ads for lucrative affiliate offers. Similarly, entire websites have been built around specific celebrities who dominate the popular media. Their owners use search engine optimization strategies to drive thousands of people to these sites each day.

The income from these short-term ventures can be staggering. The top affiliates are making hundreds of thousands of dollars each month. But, one day, the income will dry up completely. It’s already happening in the acai berry space. And it happens to nearly every short-term money maker.

Advantages Of Building Long-Term Assets

When you build an online business as a long-term asset, you insulate yourself from market volatility. The income generated from such assets is sustainable. It’s rarely buffeted by unpredictable legislation or haphazard media coverage.

For example, suppose you’re building an information product business in the dating and relationship space. It’s an evergreen market. It will outlast us all. Most online marketers might create an ebook or two, using free internet marketing methods and hoping for a quick burst of cash. In doing so, they waste an enormous opportunity that can produce sustainable income. There are a number of info-product businesses in the dating and relationship space that are generating high 6-figure - and in some cases, 7-figure - incomes for their owners. What’s more, they have been doing so for years.

That is the nature of long-term assets. Their income potential cannot be matched by short-term money makers.

Creating Your Exit Strategy

There is another important reason to focus your time and energy on creating long-term businesses: they can be easily sold. While money makers can generate high levels of income, they don’t fit well within an exit strategy. Their immediate inherent value is questionable. For example, acai berry websites have been selling for a measly 2 times monthly earnings, a pittance compared to the multiples paid for more sustainable businesses. In a year’s time, it’s doubtful whether those sites will even be able to attract that much.

At some point in the future, you’ll want to sell your business. Whether you want to retire or funnel the capital into other promising ventures, having that exit strategy is critical. But, it is practically impossible to plan your future exit from short-term money makers.

Here’s the bottom line: exploit money makers if you can identify them and act quickly. But, focus your effort on building long-term business assets. Years down the road, you’ll be glad you did.
